Welcome to Kicking the Seat!

Ian Simmons launched Kicking the Seat in 2009, one week after seeing Nora Ephron’s Julie & Julia. His wife proposed blogging as a healthier outlet for his anger than red-faced, twenty-minute tirades (Ian is no longer allowed to drive home from the movies).

The Kicking the Seat Podcast followed three years later and, despite its “undiscovered gem” status, Ian thoroughly enjoys hosting film critic discussions, creating themed shows, and interviewing such luminaries as Gaspar NoéRachel BrosnahanAmy Seimetz, and Richard Dreyfuss.

Ian is a member of the Chicago Film Critics Association. He also has a family, a day job, and conflicted feelings about referring to himself in the third person.

A YouTube Channel from the Last Guy Anyone Asks

Yep, I've made the leap to video! Kicking the Seat began as a written-review website ten years ago, and evolved into a podcast-exclusive venture earlier this year. After prolonged hemming and hawing about starting a YouTube channel, I finally decided to step into the unforgiving realm of video.

Sure, you'll be able to find reviews, guests, and round tables on the channel, but I intend to focus on unscripted, bite-sized commentaries about the art of film criticism. We assessors of cinema don't have the greatest reputation, and I want to do my part to change that.

So please watch this introductory piece and, if you woud like to see more, feel free to "like", subscribe, and click the bell for notifications. Also, pop into the comments with your own ideas for show topics, gripes about the lighting quality, or just to say, "Hey!"

Thanks, and see you soon!
