Welcome to Kicking the Seat!

Ian Simmons launched Kicking the Seat in 2009, one week after seeing Nora Ephron’s Julie & Julia. His wife proposed blogging as a healthier outlet for his anger than red-faced, twenty-minute tirades (Ian is no longer allowed to drive home from the movies).

The Kicking the Seat Podcast followed three years later and, despite its “undiscovered gem” status, Ian thoroughly enjoys hosting film critic discussions, creating themed shows, and interviewing such luminaries as Gaspar NoéRachel BrosnahanAmy Seimetz, and Richard Dreyfuss.

Ian is a member of the Chicago Film Critics Association. He also has a family, a day job, and conflicted feelings about referring to himself in the third person.

Ep190: TONI! TONI! TONI!

This week, The Kicking the Seat Podcast welcomes back HollywoodChicago.com's Patrick "The Über Critic" McDonald for a look at Maren Ade's dramatic dissertation on discomfort, Toni Erdmann! The German comedy opens today at Chicago's Music Box Theatre, and was recently named a contender for Best Foreign Language Film by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Listen as the guys break down themes, and have a breakdown trying to remember plot specifics!

Also, Ian plugs two not-to-be-missed events coming up this weekend:

  • An appearance by The Dark Room Men (with vocals from The Über Critic himself!) at Redline Tap's "Rock 'N Roll Circus" on Sunday!

  • A special screening of the documentary Colin Hay: Waiting for My Real Life at City Winery--featuring a live post-show Q&A with former Men at Work front-man, Colin Hay!

Like Toni Erdmann, Episode 190 is indescribably weird and vaguely European, but it's sure to warm your heart!
