Welcome to Kicking the Seat!

Ian Simmons launched Kicking the Seat in 2009, one week after seeing Nora Ephron’s Julie & Julia. His wife proposed blogging as a healthier outlet for his anger than red-faced, twenty-minute tirades (Ian is no longer allowed to drive home from the movies).

The Kicking the Seat Podcast followed three years later and, despite its “undiscovered gem” status, Ian thoroughly enjoys hosting film critic discussions, creating themed shows, and interviewing such luminaries as Gaspar NoéRachel BrosnahanAmy Seimetz, and Richard Dreyfuss.

Ian is a member of the Chicago Film Critics Association. He also has a family, a day job, and conflicted feelings about referring to himself in the third person.

Kickstarter Campaign: INNSMOUTH!

"This was to be my realm, too - I could not escape it. I would never die, but would live with those who had lived since before man ever walked the earth.”

--H.P. LovecraftThe Shadow Over Innsmouth

Hey, Everyone! I want to tell you about an unspeakably cool new Kickstarter campaign! Acclaimed horror photographer Joshua Hoffine and makeup-effects artist J. Anthony Kosar (SyFy's Face Off champion) have joined forces to commemorate H.P. Lovecraft's 125th birthday with Innsmouth, a photographic interpretation of The Shadow Over Innsmouth's climactic confrontation!

Yeah, we're talking grotesque gill-men closing in on a hapless-narrator-type, brought to life with creatures from Kosar's team of weirdness wizards and Hoffine's eye for the off-kilter. Best yet, the doomed hero of the piece will be portrayed by lovable, huggable genre icon, Doug Jones (Pan's Labyrinth, Hellboy, Arrow)!

The collaboration will result in a stunning, frame-worthy photo-print (and a decade's worth of nightmares for young'uns everywhere!). Though production is well under way, the guys could really use your help to fully realize Innsmouth's dark vision--and they're offering an otherworldly treasure trove of perks for adventurous backers! From the postcard pictured above; to hand-crafted, limited-edition Kosart collectibles; to signed Innsmouth prints; to shot-used monster-head props; to a set visit and lunch with the whole gang--all this and more are yours for the investing!

Whether it's five dollars or five-thousand dollars, every contribution will shepherd Innsmouth closer into our dimension. Won't you join us, dear reader?

Can't get enough Doug Jones? Check out this 2010 KtS interview where the actor talks projects, process, and prosthetics!

Special thanks to project producer Chad Hawks for turning us on to the campaign. Chad played London's legendary serial killer in Hoffine's Jack the Ripper diptych a few years ago. Check out this blog for some of that shoot's behind-the-scenes magic--and perhaps insight into Innsmouth!
