Welcome to Kicking the Seat!

Ian Simmons launched Kicking the Seat in 2009, one week after seeing Nora Ephron’s Julie & Julia. His wife proposed blogging as a healthier outlet for his anger than red-faced, twenty-minute tirades (Ian is no longer allowed to drive home from the movies).

The Kicking the Seat Podcast followed three years later and, despite its “undiscovered gem” status, Ian thoroughly enjoys hosting film critic discussions, creating themed shows, and interviewing such luminaries as Gaspar NoéRachel BrosnahanAmy Seimetz, and Richard Dreyfuss.

Ian is a member of the Chicago Film Critics Association. He also has a family, a day job, and conflicted feelings about referring to himself in the third person.

Ep217: Go Home, America...You're Drunk!

Ten bucks says you've never heard of Colossal (let alone seen it). Today, the Kicking the Seat Podcast and Keeping it Reel's David Fowlie do our best to fix that by providing a thorough and enthusiastic discussion of Nacho Vigalondo's indie-dramedy-monster-movie-mash-up, starring Anne Hathaway and Jason Sudeikis. The film has just as many highs as lows, and operates on layers that the guys are still trying to sort out.

How do the mid-film tonal shift and a lack of key connective tissue affect our resilient reviewers' overall enjoyment? You're just moments away from the answer!

Also, with the recent announcement of the Chicago Critics Film Festival's blockbuster fifth-year lineup, Ian and David talk about some of the movies and guests they're most looking forward to checking out at the Music Box Theatre between May 12th and 18th!

When you say, "Kaiju", Episode 217 says, "Gesundheit"!
