Welcome to Kicking the Seat!

Ian Simmons launched Kicking the Seat in 2009, one week after seeing Nora Ephron’s Julie & Julia. His wife proposed blogging as a healthier outlet for his anger than red-faced, twenty-minute tirades (Ian is no longer allowed to drive home from the movies).

The Kicking the Seat Podcast followed three years later and, despite its “undiscovered gem” status, Ian thoroughly enjoys hosting film critic discussions, creating themed shows, and interviewing such luminaries as Gaspar NoéRachel BrosnahanAmy Seimetz, and Richard Dreyfuss.

Ian is a member of the Chicago Film Critics Association. He also has a family, a day job, and conflicted feelings about referring to himself in the third person.

Ep250: #war

The Kicking the Seat Podcast crosses the quarter-thousand mark with a sobering look at three of summer's great cinematic apocalypses! Keeping it Reel's David Fowlie joins Ian to discuss some recent films about war: In This Corner of the World, War for the Planet of the Apes, and the 3D re-release of 1991's Terminator 2: Judgment Day.

What do these very different visions of mankind's obsession with self-destruction say about the creators and audiences who shaped them? Are these warnings to be taken seriously, or artistic yet disposable entertainments?

If you missed these movies amidst the season's transforming robots and wonderful women, please seek them out and enjoy this heavy but hopeful conversation.

Episode 250 is taking up arms...to give out free hugs.
