Welcome to Kicking the Seat!

Ian Simmons launched Kicking the Seat in 2009, one week after seeing Nora Ephron’s Julie & Julia. His wife proposed blogging as a healthier outlet for his anger than red-faced, twenty-minute tirades (Ian is no longer allowed to drive home from the movies).

The Kicking the Seat Podcast followed three years later and, despite its “undiscovered gem” status, Ian thoroughly enjoys hosting film critic discussions, creating themed shows, and interviewing such luminaries as Gaspar NoéRachel BrosnahanAmy Seimetz, and Richard Dreyfuss.

Ian is a member of the Chicago Film Critics Association. He also has a family, a day job, and conflicted feelings about referring to himself in the third person.

Ep343: Can't Spell KING without KIN

Today, the Kicking the Seat Podcast and F This Movie!'s Patrick Bromley interview writer/director Steve Mitchell about his eye-opening documentary on influential genre filmmaker Larry Cohen, King Cohen! Now available On Demand and kicking off a limited theatrical run at Chicago's Facets Cinematheque, the movie provides an intimate look at a strong-willed visionary who blazed an independent path on the outskirts of Hollywood, entertaining and inspiring the likes of J.J. Abrams, John Landis, and Martin Scorsese.

This super-sized episode also includes an interview with Jonathan and Josh Baker, whose revelatory sci-fi feature debut Kin opens nationwide today.* Also, Ian talks about Olive Film's spectacular new Signature blu-ray edition of the Wachowskis' 1996 neo-noir, Bound; heaps praise on Patrick's 11-hour Tobe Hooper Tribute;** curses the iPhone's lightning-cable input once again; and offers up a fun little flashback involving the Man of the Hour, Larry Cohen!

Episode 343 has the right Stuff!

*You can watch the short film that inspired Kin, Bag Man, on YouTube--which you should definitely do if you're on the fence about seeing this movie in theatres.

**Part One is now available, with more segments coming soon.
