Welcome to Kicking the Seat!

Ian Simmons launched Kicking the Seat in 2009, one week after seeing Nora Ephron’s Julie & Julia. His wife proposed blogging as a healthier outlet for his anger than red-faced, twenty-minute tirades (Ian is no longer allowed to drive home from the movies).

The Kicking the Seat Podcast followed three years later and, despite its “undiscovered gem” status, Ian thoroughly enjoys hosting film critic discussions, creating themed shows, and interviewing such luminaries as Gaspar NoéRachel BrosnahanAmy Seimetz, and Richard Dreyfuss.

Ian is a member of the Chicago Film Critics Association. He also has a family, a day job, and conflicted feelings about referring to himself in the third person.

Ep415: The Scum of the Universe

Today, the Kicking the Seat Podcast suits up to take down Men in Black International! Join Ian, Emmanuel Noisette of Eman's Movie Reviews, and Don Shanahan of Every Movie Has a Lesson as they investigate just went wrong with F. Gary Gray's unrequested fourth installment of the once-proud sci-fi/comedy franchise. Tessa Thompson and Chris Hemsworth star as two alien investigators tasked with saving the planet from energy-sucking space monsters and convincing audiences that Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones were not integral to the series' success.

Also, Ian reviews Jim Jarmusch's The Dead Don't Die and recommends Criterion's blu-ray of his debut feature, Night on Earth. Plus, Cole Rush joins Ian for a special "Shout! Out" for Shout! Factory's just-released blu-ray of Sinatra in Palm Springs(and be sure to read Cole's latest piece onThe Quill to Live, about discovering 2001: A Space Odyssey)!

Episode 415 wishes desperately for an alien invasion!
