Welcome to Kicking the Seat!

Ian Simmons launched Kicking the Seat in 2009, one week after seeing Nora Ephron’s Julie & Julia. His wife proposed blogging as a healthier outlet for his anger than red-faced, twenty-minute tirades (Ian is no longer allowed to drive home from the movies).

The Kicking the Seat Podcast followed three years later and, despite its “undiscovered gem” status, Ian thoroughly enjoys hosting film critic discussions, creating themed shows, and interviewing such luminaries as Gaspar NoéRachel BrosnahanAmy Seimetz, and Richard Dreyfuss.

Ian is a member of the Chicago Film Critics Association. He also has a family, a day job, and conflicted feelings about referring to himself in the third person.

Ep490: The Slowdown: My Dinner with BOONMEE

Today, The Kicking the Seat Podcast and writer/director Sujewa Ekanayake return with another edition of "The Slowdown"! In addition to catching up on Sujewa's indie feature, Slow Romance, and Ian's "Top 19 Films of 2019", the guys wade through the thick metaphorical jungles of Apichatpong Weerasethakul's slow cinema head-trip, Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives.

This fantastical tale centers on a Thai tamarind farmer who shares his final days with friends, ghosts, and living memories--creating a meditative tapestry punctuated by moments so jaw-droppingly weird you'll be convinced you're having an out-of-body experience.

Also, Ian shares his latest appearance on the 90 Under 90 podcast, in which he gets in a Fab Four frenzy with Dan and Jeremy Eden over A Hard Day's Night!

Episode 490 will never look at catfish the same way again!
