Welcome to Kicking the Seat!

Ian Simmons launched Kicking the Seat in 2009, one week after seeing Nora Ephron’s Julie & Julia. His wife proposed blogging as a healthier outlet for his anger than red-faced, twenty-minute tirades (Ian is no longer allowed to drive home from the movies).

The Kicking the Seat Podcast followed three years later and, despite its “undiscovered gem” status, Ian thoroughly enjoys hosting film critic discussions, creating themed shows, and interviewing such luminaries as Gaspar NoéRachel BrosnahanAmy Seimetz, and Richard Dreyfuss.

Ian is a member of the Chicago Film Critics Association. He also has a family, a day job, and conflicted feelings about referring to himself in the third person.

Ep353: Stand Up. Speak Out.

Today, the Kicking the Seat Podcast and Keeping it Reel's David Fowlie take a serious look at stand-up comedy with a discussion of Eva Vives' feature debut, All About Nina. Mary Elizabeth Winstead gives a career-high performance as Nina Geld, a struggling, acerbic New York comic whose big break puts her at odds with a collection of upbeat L.A. eccentrics. Rapper-turned-actor Common plays Rafe, the laid-back nice guy whom Nina can't quite wrap her head around.

The film couldn't be more timely, and Ian and David get into what makes Nina such a conflicted character; what role movies have in shaping or reflecting reality; and how All About Nina stacks up to the recent slew of similarly themed dramas.

Also: The guys have a brush with being famous; Dr. AC's "Scare-A-Thon" returns; and Ian tells you about the Actors Training Center fundraiser, "A Marvelous Evening with Mrs. Maisel", taking place in Highland Park on October 19th!

Episode 353 is in on the joke!
