Welcome to Kicking the Seat!

Ian Simmons launched Kicking the Seat in 2009, one week after seeing Nora Ephron’s Julie & Julia. His wife proposed blogging as a healthier outlet for his anger than red-faced, twenty-minute tirades (Ian is no longer allowed to drive home from the movies).

The Kicking the Seat Podcast followed three years later and, despite its “undiscovered gem” status, Ian thoroughly enjoys hosting film critic discussions, creating themed shows, and interviewing such luminaries as Gaspar NoéRachel BrosnahanAmy Seimetz, and Richard Dreyfuss.

Ian is a member of the Chicago Film Critics Association. He also has a family, a day job, and conflicted feelings about referring to himself in the third person.

Ep381: Saulnier School: Don't RUIN My PARTY!

Today, the Kicking the Seat Podcast signs up for "Saulnier School" with Aaron Christensen of Horror 101 with Dr. A.C.! The guys take a semester off from talking about Dario Argento in order to study one of the most talented and under-appreciated filmmakers working today.

Saulnier's 2007 debut, Murder Party, and his 2013 follow-up, Blue Ruin, couldn't be more different, thematically--but they share a daring, unpredictable voice that places pitch-black comedy, dynamite characterization, and jaw-dropping violence above tired genre trappings. Whether dropping in on the world's worst Halloween party or riding along with a damaged, semi-competent homeless man's quest for revenge, Saulnier gives audiences more ideas and images to chew on than any six movies.

Ian and Aaron take their first steps in understanding how he does it.

Also, Ian gives listeners a heads-up about this year's F! This Movie Fest, taking place on Twitter March 9th! The theme is "The Films of 1986", and it might just be Patrick Bromley's most geek-tastic lineup yet!

Episode 381 is going for extra credit!
